Passed:
4/1/2006 Governor Bill Richardson signed into law a NM state statute that require that all persons born after January 1, 1989 must pass a NASBLA-approved safe boating class (8 hours) before they can legally operate a recreational vessel on any NM waterway. This course can include the current NM Boating Safety course, or any other NASBLA-approved course that has been given by another state with similar requirements or a course such as the ABC or other Coast Guard course. Certificates already received by those persons who previously took and passed the NM course are valid to comply with the new law. Since NM State Parks Administrators are anticipating a heavy demand for these classes, they have asked the Coast Guard Auxiliary to assist in setting up and instructing these classes. This new legislation should go a long way to improve boating safety in New Mexico. Since local auxiliary units participated in the promotion of passage of this statute, members should now be prepared to assist in any way possible to get this program underway.
