Second Quarter Report, 2010: LLO’s Barbara & Festus Burchfield report no recreational boating safety legislation introduced this quarter. There have been 16 fatalities in this state so far this year, exceeding the 11 fatalities for the entire 2009 year. Recreational boating safety awareness is now at a peak for public interest, but it’s also at a time of serious budget deficits in the state, cities, and counties. In our conversations with DNR, they need financial resources to manage any new mandatory boating law, and they are already facing 47 percent budget cuts.
